Who is at Risk?

Children

sm-lead-exposure

Lead is particularly dangerous to children because their growing bodies absorb more lead than adults do and their brains and nervous systems are more sensitive to the damaging effects of lead. Babies and young children can also be more highly exposed to lead because they often put their hands and other objects that can have lead from dust or soil on them into their mouths. Children may also be exposed to lead by eating and drinking food or water containing lead or from dishes or glasses that contain lead, inhaling lead dust from lead-based paint or lead-contaminated soil or from playing with toys with lead paint.

Adults, Including Pregnant Women

0_0_0_0_301_237_csupload_32828694Adults may be exposed to lead by eating and drinking food or water containing lead or from dishes or glasses that contain lead. They may also breath lead dust by spending time in areas where lead-based paint is deteriorating, and during renovation or repair work that disturbs painted surfaces in older homes and buildings. Working in a job or engaging in hobbies where lead is used, such as making stained glass, can increase exposure as can certain folk remedies containing lead. A pregnant woman’s exposure to lead from these sources is of particular concern because it can result in exposure to her developing baby.

Where is Lead Found?

Posted by darcy56 on March 30, 2015  /   Posted in blog

leeeeLead can be found in all parts of our environment – the air, the soil, the water, and even inside our homes. Much of our exposure comes from human activities including the use of fossil fuels including past use of leaded gasoline, some types of industrial facilities, and past use of lead-based paint in homes. Lead and lead compounds have been used in a wide variety of products found in and around our homes, including paint, ceramics, pipes and plumbing materials, solders, gasoline, batteries, ammunition, and cosmetics.

Lead may enter the environment from these past and current uses. Lead can also be emitted into the environment from industrial sources and contaminated sites, such as former lead smelters. While natural levels of lead in soil range between 50 and 400 parts per million, mining, smelting, and refining activities have resulted in substantial increases in lead levels in the environment, especially near mining and smelting sites.

paintWhen lead is released to the air from industrial sources or vehicles, it may travel long distances before settling to the ground, where it usually sticks to soil particles. Lead may move from soil into ground water depending on the type of lead compound and the characteristics of the soil.

Federal and state regulatory standards have helped to minimize or eliminate the amount of lead in air, drinking water, soil, consumer products, food, and occupational settings.

This  Foundation Support works effectively to stabilize your basement walls.

How?

970-fastentofloorjointlargePowerBrace has  Heavy-duty, zinc-plated steel beams are custom-fit to your basement wall height.

  • The beam is secured tight against your basement wall with heavy-duty steel brackets that are anchored to your basement floor and floor joists.

Steel beams will stabilize the wall in its current position, without any further adjustment.

powerbrace

A unique, patented approach to the PowerBrace design is the ability to continue to tighten the system during the dry season for possible wall improvement.

PowerBrace is protected from Corrosion

foundation-wall-supportTo protect the system from corrosion, all components of the Foundation Supportworks PowerBrace System are zinc-plated in accordance with the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) B633 standards for zinc coatings on steel. Most steel beam systems offered by contractors are installed using black, uncoated steel or painted steel. Unprotected steel offers very little resistance to corrosion, resulting in a rusted and unsightly system in your basement living space and potential health concerns.

What is STABLEWALL?

stablwall-bridgeA carbon fiber sheeting that has been used in:

  •  Aerospace industry
  • Bridges and tunnels
  • Reinforcement of Basement Walls

HOW DOES IT WORK?

carbon-fiberComposed of 1000’s of thin carbon fibers lined up parallel to each other

When installed, it is impregnated with an epoxy bonding adhesive

Bonding the carbon fibers to each other and the wall

These fibers become very resistance to stretching (10x’s the resistance of steel at the same thickness)

step6

What are the BENEFITS?

  1. 10x’s stronger than steel beams
  2. very thin
  3. when placed on a wall and then painted, it is almost invisible!
  4. easy installation
  5. works on poured, block, and brick walls

Don’t let this be you!

Basement Waterproofing

It is essential to waterproof your basement  anytime a structure is built @ ground level or below the ground.

Waterproofing is vital when:

  • ground water is likely to build up in the soil and raise the water table
  • when the high water table causes hydrostatic pressure under the basement floors and walls

What is hydrostatic pressure?
false-water-table-toronto-waterproofing

  • Forces water in through cracks in the foundation and walls caused by the expanding and contracting of the footing- foundation wall joint & up through the cracks
  • This pressure can cause major structural damage to:
    flood-in-new-jersey

    • foundation
    • walls

Leading to:

  • mold
  • decay
  • other moisture related problems
